Eleanor Hayes

Eleanor taught third grade in the same small brick schoolhouse for thirty-one years. She kept a tin of butterscotch in her desk drawer and swore it was for the children, though everyone knew better. She married Walter in the spring of 1961. They raised four children, a rotating cast of stray cats, and a vegetable garden that fed half the street each August. Eleanor believed a person should be able to name three things they were grateful for before breakfast, and she asked her grandchildren for theirs every single morning.
